How to Create a Home Gym

Creating a home gym can seem like a daunting task, so let’s discuss preparation first. Determining space needed is of utmost importance. You will want to think about your basic equipment wants and needs. Many of the “experts” believe a Power Rack is one of the primary essentials to allow for your basic, but important, free weight lifting exercises including bench press, squats, and military press. This is ideal because you’ll now have the ability to use safety arms in lieu of a spotter who likely won’t be available in your home. You can now imagine the space you will need. A tall enough ceiling to allow for a standing press and wide enough to fit the Power Rack and other potential equipment such as a treadmill, elliptical machine, exercise bike, and some free space for and exercise ball, yoga mat, jump rope, or anything else you want room for. That said, a basement, garage, or spare bedroom are the most likely candidates for this space.

Now that we have thought about space, the next determining factor for creating a home gym is cost. If we keep it to the basic essentials, we need to budget for an adjustable bench and Olympic barbell with that power rack, your preferred cardio machine, and a few dumbbells of the weights you would most commonly use. This may seem like a big spend at first, but think about how quickly those monthly payments for gym memberships will add up (not to mention the time and money spent commuting back and forth to the gym, waiting on exercise equipment, and chatting with others). We should also figure in a cost for new floors as those will most likely be needed. The cost is going to vary depending on the quality and material chosen. Rubber flooring is popular choice for home gyms and prices will vary depending on the quality. You can also look into rubber mats over a durable hard-surface floor such as laminate or luxury vinyl. This may provide a more cost-friendly, aesthetically pleasing look.

One other factor to think about for your home gym is where to create it. We know how much space we need now, but which space would work best. Most people would agree that distraction-free, focused workouts are preferred, so maybe the garage would be most suitable to get away from everything. If you are going to use an indoor room or basement, invest in a stereo to block out those potential noise interruptions in your home gym and make sure there’s a door!
